Pearl earrings for Indian wear: studs or drops?

Rhombus Pearl Cascade Earrings in 92.5 sterling silver and freshwater pearl

Pearls are one of the few things that look right with almost everything, from a cotton kurta to a silk saree. So the real choice is not whether to wear pearls but what shape: studs that sit on the ear, or drops that hang and move.

Pearl studs: the everyday pair

Studs sit close to the ear, so they never fight with a dupatta, a high neckline or a phone pressed to your ear all day. They are the pair for office, college and daily wear, and the right choice if you want one pair you can wear all week without thinking.

A single pearl is the quietest option. A cluster reads a little dressier while staying small: the Pearl Cluster Studs set five pearls around one clear stone, and the Pinwheel Pearl Studs add a turn of silver rays around the pearl.

Drop earrings: for movement and evenings

Drops catch the light every time you turn your head. That is why they suit evenings, family functions and festive outfits. With a saree or a lehenga with an open neckline, a longer drop balances the look. If you are already wearing a heavy necklace, pick a slimmer drop so the two do not compete.

The Rhombus Pearl Cascade Earrings are our longest at 3.5 cm and swing as you move. The Rectangle Pearl Drop Earrings are a cleaner line for when you want something modern.

Match the earring to the neckline

  • Round neck or boat neck: studs or a short drop, so the space around the face stays open.
  • V-neck, saree or open neckline: a longer drop to fill the space and draw the eye up.
  • High collar, bandhgala or a heavy dupatta: studs, which will not catch on fabric.
  • Hair up: drops show beautifully. Hair down and long: studs or a bold short drop are easier to see.

One pair for both?

A short drop is the answer. The Infinity Pearl Drop Earrings are about 1 cm, a loop of silver with a pearl resting underneath. Small enough for a working day, with enough movement for dinner after.

A note on comfort

All our earrings are 92.5 sterling silver, which most people with sensitive ears wear without trouble, unlike plated base metal. Each pair weighs only a gram or two. See all pearl earrings, or read how to tell real pearls from fake.
